ABOUT THE COLLECTION

The Maria Rogers Oral History Program (MROHP) has been collecting and archiving oral histories about Boulder County since 1976. The collection is named for Maria M. Rogers, the woman who nurtured the vision and the volunteers for more than 12 years, creating what is now one of the larger collections of local history in the United States.

The Maria Rogers Oral History Program (MROHP) Collection contains more than 1,300 interviews with people about all aspects of life in Boulder County, providing a richly detailed account of both daily life and major events. The interviews record the lives of a wide range of people, including pioneers and other settlers, cattlemen, farmers, housewives, university professors, politicians and political activists, attorneys, physicians, coal miners, teach-ers, artists, scientists, and more.

Almost all of the interviews are done by volunteers. Until the late 1990s, interviews were done on analog audio tape. Most interviews now are done in digital video, allowing the inclusion of historic photos, artifacts, and other visual elements, such as tours of historic property. The online archiving system currently includes the audio portion of interviews and the written summaries and/ or transcripts. In the future, we hope to make the video portion of the interviews available by computer also.

The collection is housed in the Carnegie Library for Local History, a branch of the Boulder Public Library, located at 1125 Pine St. in Boulder, CO. Patrons may watch video tapes of the newer interviews at the library as well as have access to files that often include supplementary information about the narrators.
