HOW TO PLAY THE INTERVIEWS

Starting the Interview

The interview you select will automatically begin to play in about 5 to 15 seconds. Each section (A, B, C, etc.) loads separately, but it will automatically start in a short time when moving to a new section of the interview.

Playing the Interview

If you have a fast internet connection, such as DSL or cable, audio should stream seamlessly throughout the interview. If you have a dial-up internet connection, you may experience breaks in the audio due to slow downloading of the sound. See Technical Help for more information.

Controls

You can control the playing of the sound by using the buttons at the bottom left corner of your screen. Use your computer's sound controls to change the volume.

Jump to a Topic

The JUMP feature allows a user to jump to an area of interest within an interview. It works on Windows-based computers at this time. To use it:
  1. Wait until an interview is 100% loaded (check the "% loaded" field in the control-button area), then click on the underlined numbers on the left-hand side of a summary/ transcript. The audio will jump to approximately that portion of the interview and begin playing. (This feature is most accurate on newer interviews.)
  2. There is no need to wait for the sound to load completely if you just want to listen to the interview from the beginning. The interview will begin playing from the beginning within a few seconds. Just wait till it is completely loaded before using the JUMP feature.

Search Within Interviews

Once you have selected an interview, you can use "Ctrl +F"(Windows) or "Command +F"(Mac) in the summary/transcript frame to search for topics in which you are interested.

Photos

Some interview entries have links to photos, many of which are from the Carnegie Library colleciton. Click on a photo to enlarge it.

Video Interviews

An interview that has a V at the end of its number initially was recorded in digital video. A video version of the interview may be viewed by visiting the Carnegie Library, 1125 Pine St. in Boulder, CO.
