TECHNICAL HELP

Flash

In order to use the audio portion of the Oral History Digital Archive from outside the Boulder Public Library, you need to have FLASH installed on your computer. If you do not have FLASH, click here to download it for free.

Platforms and Browsers

At this time, the audio portion of the interviews will play on Windows computers with most browsers. Macintosh computers will play interview audio with Internet Explorer or with Safari when set up to emulate Internet Explorer. If you are not able to play the interviews' audio, you still will be able to view the summaries and transcripts of interviews.

Streaming Audio

If you have a fast internet connection, such as DSL or cable, audio should stream seamlessly throughout the interview. If you have a dial-up internet connection, you may experience breaks in the audio due to slow downloading of the sound.

If sound is annoyingly intermittent, click on the "Stop" button in the lower left portion of your screen to prevent it from playing. You will still be able to use the summaries and transcripts for interviews.

Jump Feature

The JUMP feature allows a user to jump to an area of interest within an interview. It works on Windows-based computers at this time. To use the JUMP feature on a Windows computer
  1. Wait until an interview is 100% loaded (check the "% loaded" field in the control-button area). If you try to use the JUMP feature before the interview is 100% loaded, the interview will just begin playing again from the beginning.
  2. Once the "% loaded filed" reads "100%," click on the underlined numbers (index numbers) on the left-hand side of a summary or transcript. The audio will jump to approximately that portion of the interview and begin playing. (This feature is most accurate on newer interviews.)
  3. There is no need to wait for the sound to load completely if you just want to listen to the interview from the beginning. When you first load an interview, it will begin playing from the beginning within a few seconds. You can continue listening while the sound is loading. You only need to wait until the interview is completely loaded to use the JUMP feature.
  4. If you want to JUMP to a portion of the interview that is in the second (or third, etc.) sound file, you can do so by clicking on that index number any time after the first sound file has loaded to 100%.
Macintosh computers: Currently, if you are using a Macintosh computer, using the JUMP feature will send the interview back to the beginning. Instead of using the JUMP feature, you can use the fast forward and rewind buttons to move around the interview's audio on Macintosh computers.
